I get asked a lot, "why Portland?" which is a fair question. Through attempting to answer this question many times, I've uncovered a strange thing. It seems there is an agreed-upon way to grow an agency into a new market, which is to identify a key client and create an office to service their account. I suppose there is acquisition as well but this isn't a popular path for independent digital agencies.
The traditional path of growing until you are ready to burst and sending out a rogue team to…

Over the last few weeks I’ve received a lot of feedback on our companies move to an Adaptive Marketing approach. One of the recurring questions has been around how it works. As one of our
LinkedIn forum members said, “If no one is currently doing this, how can an agency possibly integrate the process and make it work?” Great question and one that’s been on our minds a lot lately, too.
As luck would have it, a…

All of the major cable networks and networks have an online presence, and are currently allowing users to view content complete with commercials, which are shorter and offer a countdown telling the viewer how much time will elapse until the show returns. And although Hulu was threatening to go to a pay model, it hasn't yet. So exactly how much content can a viewer view online, and digitally through their iPod, iPad or computer? Pretty much all of it. Sometimes a viewer must wait… Continue

Since I posted our
announcement about the Teehan+Lax Programs Group moving to an Adaptive Marketing approach there’s been a lot of curiosity and spirited discussion. My main takeaway is that people agree with the need for change and want to talk more about this model.
After listening to what people had to say I thought it made sense to clarify a few things, namely:
* Language and terminology
* Agency…

I had an interesting conversation this weekend with my cousin about education. It was really a bit of a debate. (This is where the people who really know me laugh, because I seem to enjoy debating…) For
brevity, I’ll just say that he argued for experience over formal
education and little ms. mba argued the opposite.
The truth is that there are so many ways to learn – formal school programs, community college, trade schools, independent learning, mentors, work experience, and…

Many of us entered the interactive industry because it was fast-paced, exciting and highly innovative. We saw an opportunity to help change the way business was done, and in so doing help consumers in fresh and engaging ways. Recently, we’ve noticed an unsettling trend. Agencies are becoming
more and more similar. They’ve adapted the same processes. They create the same products. And for the…

“We can put together a fan page in Facebook, add a new profile in Twitter, make a track list in tune with our own brand at Spotify, hire an adwords campaign at Google and there you have it.” As you’re reading this, for sure there’s someone (related to some kind of media, agency, an advertiser or from anywhere else) saying something similar in Buenos Aires, San Francisco, Paris, Madrid, Toronto or wherever you think…

You know that book you’ve always wanted to write, about all that fascinating stuff you know and all those opinions you’ve formed that everyone needs to hear? Well now you can. You can publish it online - in the form of a blog.
This is the sort of revelation web enthusiasts began spouting when the term weblog and its shortened form blog started doing the rounds in about 97-98. Apparently, and no doubt spurred…

We are overwhelmed. Bombarded. Stunned. Overexposed. Every X amount of days, something new grabs the attention of all the people who, in one way or another, work in or is related to the new technologies and/or new media (communicators, advertisers, economists, technologists, researchers, journalists, and a loooong etc.) in a furious and apparently unstoppable manner.
Suddenly, everything should be absorbed ASAP.…

There are hundreds of sites and countless articles to read online about this and other pertinent topics in today's digital circus and I know I never have time to read everything I want to, even with the best of intentions. So I'm going to make this as succinct as possible whilst being as helpful as possible, in the shortest time… Continue

As the owner of a Digital agency, I don’t come from a purely marketing background which means I only speak conversational ‘Marketese’ at best. I’m also afflicted with my own self imposed honesty and integrity. So when a client asks me, “Is there really anything my business can gain from social media” I know they’re expecting more than a “why, yes, if you take a widescreen strategic approach and commit to a number of channels over a long period of time” type response.
There’s so much…

When you ask a company about their digital strategy, and the response you get is “We’re going to start blogging and twittering and a FB fan page…” – it’s still surprising to me. If you fast forward to the leadership meeting, you’ll hear some undertonesof charts and numbers (with nothing to really compare it to) but the real energy in reporting out is that we did it. We started the blog. We started the conversation. Now we’re dealing with how to engage
